The secret to choosing the perfect engagement ring…

When it comes to choosing the perfect engagement ring, educating yourself on a few key pointers will help you find the right one. An engagement ring is a once-in-a-lifetime investment, and like all investments, you want to be knowledgeable so that you are confident in your decision.

Sometimes picking an engagement ring can be overwhelming, Eternal Jewellery is here to guide you through the experience. You don’t need much to get started. All you’ll need to know before you start ring shopping is detailed below:

Ring Size

Know her ring size, this is the starting point for buying an engagement ring. If she wears rings, borrow one she already owns. Discreetly get hold of that ring because it can be used to determine her ring size when presented at any jewelry shop. You may also ask someone close to her, you may be lucky enough that they already know the answer from previous conversations. And if not, ask them to subtly work the question into a conversation.

Another way to find out her ring size is while she sleeps, this one can be very tricky and can spoil the surprise if she is a light sleeper, carefully wrap a piece of string around her finger while she rests and the circumference measurement in millimetres can be converted into her ring size using a ring size chart.

Jewellery Preferences

What kind of jewelry does she wear? Is she more classic or modern? Feminine or sophisticated? Does she wear more silver or gold? Do her pieces tend to be more delicate or chunky? Simple or ornate? Too plain or very busy? Always have these preferences in mind when considering buying an engagement ring. If you buy something similar to what she already likes, you can’t go wrong.

P.S Do not get a huge rock for her if she loves subtle jewellery, it’s highly likely she may not fancy the ring a hundred percent.

Ring Style & Stone Shape

Are her preferences hard to pin down? Notice the shapes of her pendants, fashion rings, or earrings. (Are they round, heart-shaped, emerald, or radiant, etc.). Always avoid the awkwardness of choosing an engagement ring that’s more to your taste than hers. She needs to be the focus…

Hint Hint

Ladies have a special superpower; “hinting”. A gentleman needs to pay attention to the clues thrown at him, sometimes she’ll accidentally send you pictures, upload a ring picture on her Facebook and WhatsApp story, tag you on a Facebook post, or even send you screenshots of her friend’s engagement ring. Pay attention to the details that accompany these hints.

 Cost Saving

Do you have a tight ring budget? It could be a good idea to purchase a two-piece ladies’ set, use the engagement ring to propose, and add the band on the wedding day. A few days before the wedding, the engagement ring can be good as new with the amazing free polishing services under the Eternal Jewellery warranty. Purchasing a set is cost-efficient and ideal for couples on a tight budget.

If she prefers clean, modern lines in furniture, it’s likely she’ll react well to the same aesthetic in rectangular or square shapes, like the Emerald Cut or Princess-Cut.

If she tends towards the traditional, a Round shape or Solitaire would be a hit. More bohemian types tend to favour unusual shapes, like Trilliant or Marquise.

Too young to marry?

Last year, Cosmas married Carol and there were concerns by the social media public about their age. This morning we woke up to Facebook buzz about Enock Mwepu’s age and people are up in arms again with a lot of negative chatter; he is too Young to Marry they say…

By what criteria are they too young? How does one know when they are ready to marry?

Some of the most common ways to know are:

  • Maturity – When you realize that the world does not revolve around you; and are able to empathize with the needs of others. Maturity does not always come with age, it’s deliberate.
  • Content with the person you have chosen – Are you still searching for better or this is it for you?
  • Self-knowledge – Know yourself, the general direction you would like your life to go and love yourself so you can still be an individual in your marriage.
  • Financial Literacy (stability) – You have to be financially responsible to help build and maintain a home which comes with financial expenses.

As social media public, we are unable to fully assess these couples and make an absolute and objective conclusion about whether they are too young to marry or not, ready or not. Time will tell, but they do not need unnecessary pressure from us, life is about growth and learning through decision making. Only an undecisive individual forfeits progress for fear of failure.

These couples are to be commended in contrast to their older counterparts who are putting off marriage till much later in life, some well into their late 30s for some absurd reasons like fear of commitment. Yet they show commitment at their jobs and hobbies; football and betting to name a couple…

There are other conversations we could be engaging in as the Zambian public that directly impact us, like child marriages. According to UNICEF statistics from 2017; 5% of girls in Zambia are married by the age of 15 and 29% by the age of 18. World Vision, also states that Zambia has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world. Sexually transmitted infections and even HIV/AIDS and complications of early motherhood affect the social wellbeing of girls who go through child, early and forced marriage, denying them the right to enjoy their childhood. Let’s jump on this conversation and find ways we can help make a difference for many young people forced into marriage because of poverty, it affects the productivity and health of our country.

In conclusion, we hope when you think “Too Young to Marry”, it’s in line with Zambia’s child marriage problem and not a grown couple’s mutual decision to marry. At Eternal Jewellery, we celebrate love; to find genuine, reciprocal, lasting affection is a blessing and we wish both couples the very best in their unions.
