What is ring resizing?

Ring resizing is the process of making a ring smaller or bigger to fit your ring finger and it can be done on most metals. 

The need to resize your ring may arise due to weight loss or weight gain and sometimes it’s done simply because of wanting to wear it on another finger.

What Metals can be resized?

Platinum

Platinum is a precious silvery white metal that has very recently become a popular choice for all types of jewelry.It’s extremely durable and will last forever. Platinum is also one of the most expensive metals because of its rarity and density. 

Gold

Gold rings are not always 100% pure because pure gold is too soft to shape into complex designs. It is often mixed with alloy metals to strengthen it. 

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of other metals, usually  copper.

Effects of Ring Resizing

When a ring is resized, the place where it was cut and then soldered (a joining process used to join different types of metals together by melting a metal alloy) becomes weak. It doesn’t help that these cuts are made from the bottom part of the ring, which is usually subject to the most stress. 

And if you exert pressure on the place where the ring is soldered it can bend or break, however, if the resizing is done well the risk is minimized.

In some cases, when the jeweler has not soldered the ring back together with care when resizing, the joint will be more likely to break in the future.

Metal sensitivity is considered a disorder of the immune system where the skin is irritated by metals like jewellery,. It is a common condition that affects 10% to 15% of the population. It can produce a variety of symptoms, including rashes, swelling, or pain due to contact with certain metals (MedBroadcast.com).

The most common metal people are allergic to is nickel. Nickel is a natural hard, silvery-white metal, and it is often mixed with other metals.  Contact with jewellery containing nickel causes an itchy rash and possibly blisters at the site of contact. The skin reacts when it has been exposed for a period of 24 hours or more, especially with rings.

1.Sterling Silver 

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper.  Pure sterling silver is too soft to mold into complex jewellery designs. Sterling silver is an affordable precious metal, it is durable and is usually 100% hypoallergenic metal. In some instances, nickel can be one of the components in sterling silver so when making a purchase ensure to ask if the item is nickel free. All our sterling silver rings are nickel free.

2.Tungsten Carbide Rings

If you have any metal allergies, be assured it won’t happen with tungsten as long as it’s nickel free.  It will never bend and is perfect for those who love heavy metals. Tungsten is also scratch resistant and requires little maintenance. It’s only downside is revealed when it sustains a fall from a height, it could crack or break due to its hardness. Most couples choose tungsten bands to symbolize the strength of  their love and commitment.

6 Secrets to a Successful Surprise Proposal

In order to pull off a successful surprise proposal, you first need to find out her ring size.

Here are some tips:

1. If your girlfriend regularly wears rings on her ring finger, see if you can sneak in to her jewellery box and pinch one to take to the jewellers to get it sized.

2. Get a piece of paper and when she isn’t home trace round the inside of her ring so the jeweller can get an idea of her size.

3. Ask your friends or family to do a bit of digging, or find out your girlfriends ring size for you.

4. Treat her to a day out with friends and make sure they take her to a jewellery store to browse and eventually find out her ring size and let you know discreetly.


5. Buy a ring sizer and when your partner is fast asleep gently measure her ring finger, if she is a light sleeper this might not be the best option for you but if she sleeps like a log you should be able to take her size without her ever knowing!

6. Sometimes it’s hard to find out her ring size, she may catch on to what you are up to and ruin the surprise! So, if all else fails there is always one important rule to follow – go bigger.
